Woodbury Information

Charles Jeptha Hill Woodbury was born May 4, 1851 in Lynn, Essex Country,

Massachusetts. He married Maria Hussey Brown on October 29, 1878 in Lynn.

Maria was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1856.

Charles Woodbury was employed by the Boston Manufacturers Mutual Fire

Insurance Company. He and R. E. Cabot of the Boston Board of Fire

Underwriters completed a study on the performance of sprinklers for the Factory

Mutual Fire Insurance Company in 1884. The first set of rules for the installation

of automatic sprinkler systems were based on this study.

The first meeting of the National Conference on Standard Electrical Rules was

held at the Hall of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 12 West 31st

Street, New York City, March 18 and 19, 1896. Woodbury worked for American

Bell Telephone Company at the time and was elected Secretary
