OXO

The next time you are on a boat on the Thames

in London take a close look at this tower. Zoom

in on the top and you will see O X O. The

original building was a power station. In the

1920s it was purchased by the manufacturers of

OXO beef stock cubes, Liebig Extract of Meat

Company.

The building was rebuilt in an Art Deco design

by Albert Moore. Liebig wanted to include a

tower with illuminated signs advertising the

name of their product. They were not able to get

permission for such advertising so they built the

tower with four sets of three vertical windows.

The windows were designed with O X O.

The tower survived 1970s and 1980s efforts to

have it demolished. It now houses apartments, a

restaurant, shops, and exhibition space.
