A later patent by Knopf, No. 3,630,650, issued
November 5, 1987 (application: September 9, 1986),
uses the Wecomatic ejector to create a "bottle-
tapping device and a drink-tapping device." The
drawings show the vertical unit. The Wecomatic Wine
Friend with right angle handle was first produced in
1995 and is no longer in production. Lengthy cork
removal instructions and cautions are following by this
very worthy bit of information (as written):
"Attention: This unit may also be used to a preserving
dispense of unfinished wine bottle, in order to prevent
defects as to quality of wine by having contact with
atmospheric oxygen." To accomplish this we are
simply told to mount the needle cover on the handle,
insert it in the open bottle, and press the push-button.
As a result "…the air is
partially pressed out of bottle.
As the CO2…is weightier than air, these gases deposit
as protective shield without over-pressure
on wine surface. Practically, the gases cannot
be absorbed by the wine, if they are not
under high- or over-pressure." There you
have it - no more need to recork a partially
empty wine bottle!
To use the unit for dispensing wine, the
needle is inserted into the valve head that
has a tube extended into the liquid. To
dispense liquid, simply push the button and it
will be siphoned out. It is not surprising that
the "Wine Friend" had a short life.
