An August 12, 1958 obituary in the
Baltimore Sun
newspaper reported that Miller
said his restaurant had a
“
Gemütlichkeit
atmosphere
–
with specialties of German
cooking, fine wines and foods of Baltimore and the Chesapeake Bay.
”
Looking at
the beverage offerings on the May 15, 1948 Preakness Horse Race Day special
menu we see Miller
‟
s beverage selections:
Although not a very large selection, the wines were selected well. The roast Long
Island duckling, stuffing, apple sauce, sauerkraut and whipped in cream
potatoes at $1.25 sounds like an appetizing dinner choice.
It is interesting to note that despite Miller
‟
s interest in fine wines, his August 14,
1940 application for a patent for a
“
Stopper Remover
”
makes no mention of
wine. Rather he writes
“
This invention refers to devices for removing corks or
stoppers from
champagne or liquor bottles
and more particularly to a
combination cork-screw and cork remover.
