On March 29, 1920, M. Marie Léon Joseph Bart of Meurthe-et-Moselle, France
received French Patent No. 503,957 for a corkscrew in the
Lazy Tongs
style.
The corkscrew was manufactured in Nancy and marketed under the name
Zig
Zag.

Bart Zig Zags Again
On August 27, 1928, M. Marie Léon Joseph Bart received French Patent No.
649,208 for a change in the Zig Zag corkscrew originally patented by Bart on
March 29, 1920. Cap lifters were added at the top of the levers in the new patent
shown on the right.
The Zig Zag in usually marked with S.G.D.G. and M & M. S. G. D. G. is the
abbreviation for
Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement
meaning without the guarantee
of the Government. The M & M is for MARQUE ET MODELE DEPOSES
referring to trademark registration.
