Handbook of Wine
William J. Todd
s included a chapter on wine accessories
in his 1922 book
A Handbook of Wine
. He wrote
The
wine owner needs a few tools and gadgets for his
greater comfort and better security of his treasure. First
of all a decent corkscrew.
He included sketches of the
various implements.
Todd presents this pair
first with
The narrow
gimlet corkscrew [left],
though suitable for a
smaller beer cork, is not
safe to use for wine. It
may easily pull away,
bringing the core of a
perished cork with it.
He recommends the
corkscrew on the left
which gives
a better
bite on the cork.
Todd
stresses
The brush should be used to brush away fragments of dust, wax, or
cork after carefully removing the sealing wax.
When it comes to obstinate
corks, Todd claims there is
nothing better than a
double-
lever extractor.
He warns the
user to be careful when first
starting the pull for the screw
may just pull through the cork.
His copy is accompanied by a
drawing of a Heeley A-1 double
lever.
