Eugène Cusenier founded his distillery in 1857 in Ornans near Pontarlier, France.
The distillery produced absinthe until 1915 when it was outlawed. All absinthes
began to get a bad name in the late 1800s when the market became flooded with
absinthes having bad alcohol. In 1915 Cusenier went into production of a fruit
syrup and it was not until 1936 that the company produced the apéritif
―
Ambassadeur
‖
.
Today Cusenier is owned by Pernod and is known for its apéritifs like
Ambassadeur and Mandarin.
One of the most popular Cusenier advertising
posters was created by Nicolas Tamagno in 1896.
It features the comedian Joseph-Francois Dailly
making his absinthe in a pub.
